June 28, 2024 –In its recent earnings presentation, Micron Technology announced that its new DRAM memory fabs in Boise, Idaho, and Clay, New York, are slated to become operational in fiscal years 2027 and 2028, respectively.
With Micron’s fiscal year commencing in September of the previous calendar year and concluding in August of the same calendar year, the Boise fab is expected to be up and running between September 2026 and August 2027. Meanwhile, the first fab in Clay is set to enter full production between September 2027 and August 2028.
Micron also stated that it would carefully manage the timeline of future equipment expenditures for these fabs to align supply growth with anticipated demand increases.
Previously, Micron declared its intention to invest 50billionby2030,constructingoneadvancedDRAMmemoryfabinBoiseandtwoinClay.Additionally,thecompanyplanstoinvestanother75 billion in building two more memory fabs in Clay.
As per initial agreements, the U.S. federal government will provide Micron with up to 6.14billionindirectsubsidiesand7.5 billion in loan support. The New York State government will also offer incentives worth $5.5 billion.
Currently, Micron has not yet commenced the construction of the Clay fabs. According to earlier Bloomberg reports, the project site is currently home to two endangered bat species. As a result, Micron must wait until the bats enter hibernation before clearing the trees that serve as their summer habitat.
In response to inquiries from The Register, Micron clarified that environmental approval issues, including the bat habitat, have already been factored into its construction schedule, with a target start date for the project in early 2025.
