Instagram Edits Takes Aim at ByteDance’s CapCut with New Video Editor

April 23, 2025 – Instagram has officially launched Edits, a video editing app tailored specifically for content creators. This announcement comes just months after CapCut, a video editing tool from ByteDance (the parent company of TikTok), was temporarily removed from app stores following TikTok’s ban, though it has since been reinstated. Instagram’s development of Edits had been underway for several months prior to today’s release.

Edits is designed to be a comprehensive video creation platform. It seamlessly integrates with Instagram and is also compatible with other social media platforms like TikTok. The app includes a full suite of video recording and editing tools, allowing users to add AI-generated animations, background removal effects, and more. Additionally, Edits features dedicated sections for organizing creative ideas, managing projects, and exporting finished content. It also offers an inspiration feed where users can explore trending video clips and access performance analytics to inform their creative decisions.

According to Instagram, the Edits team collaborated closely with creators throughout the development process to refine the app’s design and functionality, ensuring it meets the needs of social media content producers. Future updates to Edits will introduce advanced features such as keyframe support, enhanced AI capabilities, collaboration tools, and an expanded library of fonts, text animations, voice effects, and filters.

Edits is now available for free download on the App Store.
