Game Freak Addresses Internal Data Leak: Servers Hit by Unauthorized Access

October 14, 2024 – Earlier today, prominent Pokémon leaker CentroLeaks reported that Game Freak, the developer of the Pokémon franchise, had suffered a hack, resulting in a significant leak of internal materials onto the internet. The leaked content encompassed various Pokémon game source codes and even the codename for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 console.

In response to the incident, Game Freak issued a statement revealing that in August 2024, they had discovered a breach related to the unauthorized access of their servers, leading to the exposure of personal information, including names and email addresses, of 2606 individuals, both current and former employees. They apologized for any inconvenience caused and outlined measures taken to address the situation, such as reaching out to affected individuals and establishing a consultation window. Additionally, they noted steps taken to prevent future occurrences, including rebuilding and re-examining their servers, and strengthening their security measures.

The leak revealed intriguing details about Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2 console, which has been codenamed “Ounce.” However, the most compelling aspect of the leak relates to the tenth generation Pokémon game, tentatively titled “Gaia.” Reportedly, this game is currently undergoing testing on both the Switch and Switch 2 platforms and exists in two distinct versions labeled “K” and “N.”
