August 19, 2024 – According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, who mentioned in the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Apple is expected to release the AirPods 4 next month. These upcoming headphones are rumored to come in two distinct versions, each designed to replace the currently available AirPods 2 and AirPods 3, respectively.
The standard version of the AirPods 4, meant to succeed the AirPods 2, will reportedly forgo wireless charging capabilities and feature passive noise cancellation. Conversely, the enhanced version, slated to replace the AirPods 3, will offer wireless charging support and employ active noise cancellation, notably in a semi-in-ear design.
Both versions of the AirPods 4 are anticipated to include support for spatial audio, aligning them with Apple’s current strategy implemented in products like the AirPods Pro. Additionally, they are expected to switch to a USB-C interface, mirroring the company’s recent trends in connectivity options.
