October 20, 2024 – Tesla unveiled a new video on Friday, showcasing its latest robotic taxi, the Robotaxi (also known as Cybercab), equipped with a wireless charging feature that enables a fully automated experience from driving to charging.
Designed as a driverless, steering-wheel-less, and pedal-less vehicle, the Robotaxi aims to revolutionize transportation methods. As a shared mobility platform, it ultimately aspires to transport passengers from point A to point B without any human intervention.
Tesla has taken automation a step further by integrating wireless charging pads into the Robotaxi system, creating a seamless autonomous driving and ownership experience. When the vehicle requires charging, there’s no need for manual plugging or unplugging of chargers. Instead, as demonstrated at the 2023 Investor Day, the Robotaxi simply drives over the wireless charging pad to recharge.
The video shared by Tesla illustrates how the Robotaxi can navigate to the charging pad and initiate charging independently, offering a truly end-to-end automated experience.
It’s worth noting that the video displays a charging power of only 25 kW. However, given that the Robotaxi is designed to operate independently, the charging speed may not be a critical factor, as its primary function is to autonomously transport passengers.
