Solving Tesla’s Steering Wheel Challenge: Norwegian Academy’s Wireless Turn Signal Upgrade

August 29, 2024 – Despite Tesla’s electric vehicles garnering widespread acclaim, certain aspects of their cutting-edge design have drawn criticism, notably the integration of turn signal controls within the steering wheel. However, a recent innovation by a Norwegian driving school has elegantly addressed this issue, yielding remarkable results.

Elite Trafikkskole AS, a prestigious driving academy in Norway, utilizes various Tesla models for instructional purposes. While their fleet previously consisted of models, such as the Model Y, equipped with traditional turn signal stalks, the newly acquired Model 3s feature touch-sensitive turn signal buttons seamlessly integrated into the steering wheel. According to Jon Kjetil Kallekodt, the daily operations manager at the school, the touch-based system on the Model 3’s steering wheel fell short of their expectations.

To rectify this, the school embarked on two creative modification paths. The first entailed retrofitting the new Model 3s with third-party, aftermarket traditional turn signal stalks. The second, and ultimately more successful approach, involved installing programmable wireless buttons on the back of the steering wheel to manage turn signals. As reported by Tek.no, a Norwegian technology news outlet, the wireless button solution proved exceptionally effective.

By positioning the wireless buttons at the rear of the Model 3’s steering wheel, students can effortlessly engage the turn signals when necessary. Kallekodt emphasized that the strategic placement of these buttons, combined with the natural grip taught during instruction, allows for seamless access.

“We’re accustomed to having turn signal stalks positioned at the back of the steering wheel, so integrating these programmable buttons there feels intuitive. When teaching proper hand placement, students find it incredibly convenient to reach the buttons without distraction,” said Kallekodt.

Remarkably, the school’s modification has not only improved the Model 3’s usability but has also been extended to older Model 3s and Model Ys originally equipped with conventional shift paddles. The school’s official Facebook page heralded the achievement of a 19-year-old student who successfully passed their driving test using a modified Model 3, further validating the success of this innovative solution.
