March 05, 2024 – In a move that is set to revolutionize the electric vehicle (EV) industry, Samsung SDI has announced plans to commence mass production of all-solid-state batteries (ASB) by 2027. The announcement, made ahead of the upcoming InterBattery 2024 exhibition, outlines the company’s preparations in the ASB field, positioning it as a solution to the flammability issues associated with lithium-ion batteries.
According to Samsung SDI’s CEO, Yoonho Choi, the company is fully prepared to lead the global battery market with its unparalleled “super-gap” technology. “We are making comprehensive preparations for mass-producing various forms of next-generation products, such as all-solid-state batteries,” he stated.
Inquiries reveal that Samsung has already established a pilot production line for ASBs with an industry-leading energy density of 900Whr/L at its research and development center in Suwon, south of Seoul. The company is currently producing prototype samples, paving the way for large-scale production in the coming years.
In addition to its ASB ambitions, Samsung’s battery subsidiary has also unveiled its ultra-fast charging technology. This innovative technology can charge a prismatic battery from 8% to 80% in just 9 minutes, significantly reducing charging times and enhancing the convenience of EV ownership. The company plans to develop and bring this technology to the mass production stage by 2026.
Furthermore, Samsung SDI has stated its intention to develop and mass-produce battery solutions with a sustainable lifespan of over 20 years by 2029. This commitment to longevity and sustainability aligns with the growing demand for more environmentally friendly and long-lasting EV batteries.
