After CrowdStrike’s ‘Global Thanos Snap,’ 10% of German Firms Opt for New Security Vendors

September 20, 2024 – According to a report published by theregister on September 19th, the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) has revealed that one out of every ten organizations in Germany has abandoned their current supplier’s products due to the CrowdStrike incident in July.

The BSI released the findings of a survey conducted among 311 affected organizations in Germany, which showed that 4% of the companies have already ditched their existing solutions, while another 6% are planning to do so in the near future.

It is noted that the report did not specify which products are being replaced, leaving it open to interpretation whether it refers specifically to CrowdStrike’s Falcon product or more broadly to the currently used products.

Furthermore, the BSI disclosed that 20% of German companies have raised their security standards while reviewing security suppliers.

Among the affected organizations and enterprises, a majority indicated that they first learned about the issues through social media (23%) rather than directly from CrowdStrike itself (22%).

The survey also highlighted that half of the 311 organizations surveyed had to suspend operations, with 48% experiencing temporary downtime averaging ten hours.

A faulty update from the cybersecurity company CrowdStrike caused multiple companies’ Windows PCs and servers to enter a blue screen state, akin to the catastrophic snap of Thanos’ fingers.

This issue led to temporary suspensions of flights by American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Frontier Airlines, Turkish Airlines, and Indigo Airlines. It also impacted Sky TV, the London Stock Exchange, and banking systems in multiple countries.
