OpenAI Snags Chat.com, Signaling a Bigger Push into AI-Driven Chat Interfaces

November 07, 2024 – On Wednesday local time, Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, unveiled a simple web address (chat.com) on X, which redirects users to the official ChatGPT website.

Previously, the domain was owned by Dharmesh Shah, the co-founder and CTO of HubSpot. In early 2023, Shah acquired chat.com for a price of $10 million. However, just a few months later, he announced the sale of the domain, keeping the transaction details and buyer information under wraps.

According to Dharmesh Shah, “My reason for purchasing chat.com was simple. I believed that ChatUX (Chat-based User Experience) would be the next big trend in the software industry. Communicating with computers/software through natural language interfaces is more intuitive, thanks to the advancements in Generative A.I.”

Domain transaction database NameBio revealed that chat.com was sold for $15.5 million on March 28, 2023. TechCrunch reported that OpenAI has confirmed the acquisition of the domain.
