August 13, 2024 – AMD has officially announced the completion of its acquisition of Silo AI, Europe’s largest private AI lab, in an all-cash deal valued at approximately $665 million. With this move, the scientists and engineers from Silo AI have officially joined the AMD family.
AMD’s commitment to the AI sector is evident, and this acquisition marks a strategic step forward in reinforcing its leadership position in AI and related technologies. Like other tech giants such as Google, Meta, and Apple, AMD is actively transitioning towards AI, albeit with a relatively late entry into this domain.
Vamsi Boppana, Senior Vice President of AMD’s Accelerated Computing Group (AIG), stated, “AI is our top strategic priority. We will continue to invest heavily in talent and software capabilities to support our growing customer deployments and roadmap.” He further emphasized that the Silo AI team possesses extensive experience in AI model development and integration, particularly excelling in large language models. These capabilities are expected to significantly enhance the experience of customers building high-performance AI solutions on AMD platforms.
Silo AI’s clientele includes industry giants like Allianz, Philips, Rolls-Royce, and Unilever. This acquisition not only ensures that Silo AI will continue to utilize AMD chips and technology but also propels AMD’s efforts in advancing the development of open-source generative AI training and application software.
