May 7, 2026 – According to the latest registration data from the UK’s Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), BYD has claimed the top spot in the UK’s electric vehicle (EV) sales rankings for the first four months of 2026, with 12,754 pure EVs sold and a market share exceeding 7%.
This achievement marks BYD’s official rise above traditional automotive giants like BMW, Tesla, and Volkswagen, establishing it as the largest EV brand in the UK.

Since entering the UK market in 2023, BYD has rapidly expanded its presence with a diverse model lineup including the Dolphin, Seal, and Tang. From January to April 2026, its pure EV sales surged by an astonishing 2,511% year-on-year, while overall new vehicle sales reached 26,396 units, up 124% from the same period last year, making it the fastest-growing mainstream brand in the UK automotive market.
Bono Ge, Managing Director of BYD UK, attributed the brand’s success to shifting consumer preferences amid high fuel prices. “UK buyers are increasingly opting for cost-effective electric vehicles, and BYD’s models offer an ideal combination of affordability and long-range capabilities that align perfectly with local demand,” he explained.
Product-wise, the Dolphin series has become a bestseller thanks to its budget-friendly pricing, while the Seal series appeals to younger drivers with its sporty performance and advanced smart features. The Tang EV, meanwhile, meets the space requirements of family users.
In addition to its product strategy, BYD has accelerated its investment in the UK’s charging infrastructure and sales network. The company now operates over 30 dealerships across major cities, providing customers with a comprehensive EV ecosystem. With continued localization efforts, BYD is poised to further expand its market share in both the UK and broader European markets.
