June 24, 2025 – Sony Interactive Entertainment’s CEO, Hideaki Nishino, has officially announced that the development of the PlayStation 6 (PS6) gaming console has kicked off and is now the company’s “top – priority project,” though no specific release date for the device has been set yet.
In contrast, the current – generation PlayStation 5 (PS5) is still in the middle of its product lifecycle. Launched in 2020, the PS5 has managed to achieve global sales of over 65 million units to date. However, as the market becomes increasingly saturated, a slowdown in the sales growth rate of the PS5 series is an anticipated trend. This situation has spurred Sony to expedite its plans for the next – generation console.

At present, there is a lack of concrete details regarding the hardware specifications of the PS6. Nevertheless, during an interview, Nishino made it clear that the PS6 would not abandon the traditional local hardware – based operation model. He explained that “Sony can’t fully control the end – to – end network connection quality for users,” indicating that the PS6 will continue to prioritize “local game operation.”
While Sony has not yet disclosed the official launch date of the PS6, court documents related to Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard suggest that Sony had hinted at a potential release of its next – generation console around 2028.
