Samsung’s Galactic Leap: “Space Factory” Project to Propel South Korea’s Aerospace Industry Forward

May 22 2025 – In recent years, the space sector has witnessed a surge in interest from numerous countries and enterprises, and it appears that Samsung Group is also stepping into this competitive arena. According to reports from South Korean media outlet kedglobal, Samsung C&T has embarked on a project dubbed “Space Factory.”

Earlier this year, Samsung Electronics’ research division made headlines by recruiting its first batch of experts in the aerospace field. Shortly after, the company was revealed to be in the early stages of developing solutions for space infrastructure, encompassing rocket launch facilities and platforms. Additionally, on May 7, Samsung forged a partnership with the Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute to jointly develop secondary payloads for CubeSats, a type of small, cube-shaped satellite. These CubeSats are slated to be aboard NASA’s Artemis II test mission.

Through this collaboration, Samsung Electronics aims to put its next-generation, in-house-developed semiconductor chips to the test in the harsh conditions of high Earth orbits and high-radiation environments.

Samsung’s forays into the aerospace domain are not new. Over the years, the company has made several attempts to explore this frontier. For instance, it introduced Galaxy watch faces that display the time on other planets. As part of the Polaris Dawn mission, a Galaxy Watch 5 was sent into the Van Allen radiation belt. Samsung also utilized the Galaxy S24 Ultra to capture stunning images from space and launched a “Space Selfie” campaign in 2019, sending a Galaxy S10 into the stratosphere.

Looking ahead, Samsung has set its sights on more ambitious goals, including the development of space infrastructure. Experts believe that rocket launch pads and spacecraft components could serve as new growth engines for South Korea. With its extensive experience in constructing ultra-high buildings, as well as industrial facilities in polar regions and deep seas, South Korea is poised to gain a competitive edge in the space sector, according to industry observers.

Samsung’s keen interest in space exploration is evident not only through its Galaxy brand but also through the technical prowess of Samsung Heavy Industries, one of the world’s largest shipbuilders. Its expertise in manufacturing large-scale equipment provides a solid foundation for space exploration, which may well be Samsung’s “final frontier.”
