July 16, 2025 – OpenAI is making bold strides in the realm of internet infrastructure, as it is reportedly developing an AI – powered browser internally codenamed “Aura”. This move signals the company’s ambition to expand its influence beyond its existing AI – driven services.
The existence of “Aura” was first hinted at by X user @Tibor, who stumbled upon references to the project in relevant code. In the ChatGPT web application, code snippets such as “is Aura” (similar to code that checks if a device is Android, iOS, or an Electron/ChatGPT Windows desktop app), “is Aura Sidebar”, and “in Aura” have been found. These indicate that the “Aura” project has already entered the development phase.
Earlier, Reuters had reported that OpenAI was working on a Chrome alternative based on the Chromium framework. This new browser is set to leverage both generative and agent – based AI capabilities, aiming to revolutionize the way users browse the web.
OpenAI has also shown a keen interest in the outcome of the US antitrust lawsuit against Google. If the result is unfavorable for Google, OpenAI has expressed its intention to acquire the Chrome browser. However, regardless of whether this acquisition materializes, the company is forging ahead with its own browser project. Given its Chromium – based architecture, “Aura” is expected to be launched on all major platforms, ensuring wide – ranging cross – platform compatibility.
In addition to the browser project, OpenAI is not resting on its laurels in the field of AI models. It is currently developing the next – generation GPT – 5 model. This model will integrate breakthroughs from different models to offer users a more superior and intelligent interaction experience. Moreover, OpenAI is testing the integration of computer agent support into ChatGPT’s reasoning chain, although details about this new feature remain under wraps for now.
