April 18, 2025 – Elon Musk’s AI startup xAI is accelerating efforts to bridge the gap between its chatbot, Grok, and industry leaders like ChatGPT and Google Gemini. Today, xAI unveiled a new “memory” feature for Grok, designed to retain contextual details from past conversations, enabling more personalized recommendations based on user interactions—provided the bot has enough data to learn individual preferences.
While ChatGPT already supports a similar memory function and recently upgraded to access full chat histories, and Google Gemini maintains persistent memory tailored to user habits, Grok’s latest addition aims to compete by offering transparency and control. The Grok official account posted on X: “Your memories are fully visible to you. Review what Grok knows and choose to delete it at any time.”

The memory feature is now available in beta on Grok.com and iOS/Android apps, though it remains restricted in the EU and UK. Users can disable it via “Data Controls” in settings or delete individual memories from the web interface (with Android support rolling out soon). xAI also confirmed that Grok on the X platform will gain memory capabilities in phases.
This move underscores xAI’s strategy to differentiate Grok through user-centric features, positioning it as a more adaptable and privacy-conscious alternative in the AI chatbot arena.
