Microsoft and OpenAI in In – depth Talks: Securing Tech Collaboration in the AGI Era

July 30, 2025 – According to sources cited by Bloomberg, Microsoft is deep in negotiations for a deal that would guarantee its continued access to crucial technical support from OpenAI in the future. The insiders revealed that the two companies are working on new terms. These terms would allow Microsoft to keep utilizing OpenAI’s latest models and technologies, even if OpenAI declares the achievement of artificial general intelligence (AGI), which refers to AI that surpasses human intelligence.

At present, Microsoft’s existing contract with OpenAI has a clause stating that once OpenAI reaches AGI, Microsoft will lose the right to use some of OpenAI’s advanced technologies.

It is reported that representatives from both sides have been meeting regularly, and an agreement is expected to be reached within the next few weeks.

OpenAI requires Microsoft’s approval to complete its transition into a public – benefit corporation. The two companies have been negotiating for months to revise the investment terms, which also cover Microsoft’s future equity stake in OpenAI.

It’s worth noting that last month, The Information reported that Microsoft and OpenAI had differences over the AGI clause. At the same time, OpenAI is also facing a lawsuit from Elon Musk. Musk, one of OpenAI’s co – founders, left the company before its popularity soared. He accused OpenAI of deviating from its founding mission, which was to develop AI for the benefit of humanity rather than pursuing corporate profits.
