Flexbar Expands Horizons: Linux Support Brings Apple-like Touch Bar Interaction

May 27 2025 – Today, tech media outlet omgubuntu published an article highlighting that the Flexbar peripheral, initially launched as a Kickstarter campaign, has now expanded its compatibility to include Linux systems. This move allows users to enjoy an interactive experience akin to the MacBook Pro’s Touch Bar, offering a new dimension to productivity and user engagement.

The Flexbar, conceived by the Hong Kong-based team ENIAC, first made headlines in December 2024 when it was unveiled on Kickstarter. Inspired by Apple’s Touch Bar, the developers believed that the underlying concept was not flawed but rather underutilized. They envisioned a customizable and adaptive interface that could significantly enhance workflow efficiency.

ENIAC has not only managed to bring the Flexbar to market but has also continued to refine it through regular updates to the user application, SDK software, and device firmware. This month, they fulfilled a long-awaited promise by introducing Linux support, a feature that, while hinted at during the crowdfunding phase, was not explicitly guaranteed.

Initially, the Flexbar’s Kickstarter campaign set a modest goal of just $2,000, a figure that raised eyebrows given the complexity of the project, encompassing research, development, manufacturing, packaging, shipping, and software creation. Despite skepticism, ENIAC successfully delivered on their promises, achieving an astounding “10,000% overfunded” milestone that captured widespread attention.

Now, with Linux support officially available, users can download the “Flex Designer” software in AppImage format and update their device firmware directly from their Linux systems. However, it’s important to note that while some general functionalities are accessible, the overall Linux support remains in its early stages.

ENIAC has made it clear that they do not intend to open-source the Flexbar’s firmware or software, a decision that may disappoint some advocates of open-source technology. Nevertheless, the addition of Linux support marks a significant milestone for the Flexbar, expanding its appeal to a broader audience of tech enthusiasts and professionals.
