EU Boosts ‘Digital Europe’ Initiative with €1.3 Billion Investment in AI and Key Technologies

March 31, 2025 – The European Commission (EC) has announced through a statement on Friday the adoption of the DIGITAL Europe Programme for the years 2025 to 2027, allocating a significant budget of €1.3 billion to deploy crucial technologies strategic to Europe’s technological sovereignty. The program primarily focuses on artificial intelligence (AI), cloud data, cybersecurity, and digital skills, aiming to accelerate the digital transformation of businesses and public administration.

According to Xinhua News Agency, key projects under the DIGITAL Europe initiative encompass enhancing the accessibility of generative AI applications, particularly in healthcare settings. It also aims to support the development of more robust Earth climate models to facilitate climate adaptation research and disaster risk management. Additionally, the program emphasizes strengthening cybersecurity measures for vital infrastructures such as hospitals and submarine cables.

Notably, the DIGITAL Europe Programme represents the EU’s first dedicated funding plan focused on applying digital technologies across enterprises and society. With a total budget of €8.1 billion from 2021 to 2027, this initiative underscores the EU’s commitment to fostering digital innovation and security within its member states.
