March 24, 2025 – In his latest “Power On” newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman shared more insights on the Apple Watch, revealing that the rumored plastic version of the Apple Watch SE is in trouble, facing “significant risks.”
Gurman elaborates that Apple’s design team is not satisfied with the aesthetic of the plastic Apple Watch SE, deeming it “less than ideal.” Meanwhile, the operations team has encountered challenges in making the plastic casing more cost-effective compared to the current aluminum body.

Last July, Gurman reported that Apple was working on a plastic-cased Apple Watch SE, anticipated for release this year. He suggested that a more affordable Apple Watch SE with colorful plastic options could appeal to parents looking to purchase the device for their children.
Currently, the Apple Watch SE features an aluminum case, similar to other high-end Apple Watch models. When Apple last updated the Apple Watch SE in 2022, it redesigned the rear case, switching the material from ceramic to a new “nylon composite.”
