September 27, 2024 – According to a report published by tech media outlet 9to5Mac on September 26th, Apple is currently developing a smart home product dubbed “HomeAccessory” with an internal codename of “J490.” The device is rumored to be powered by an A18 chip, potentially to support Apple Intelligence.
The report, citing reliable sources, reveals that the “HomeAccessory” will feature a square-shaped screen, a departure from the rectangular design seen on iPads. It remains unclear whether this design choice will be retained in the final product.

Furthermore, the HomeAccessory is said to include an integrated camera, enabling its use for FaceTime and other video conferencing applications. The camera’s functionality extends beyond video calls; it can also recognize user gestures, allowing for hands-free control in scenarios like the kitchen. Additionally, the camera has the capability to identify individual users, facilitating “Personal Requests” similar to how the HomePod distinguishes between different voices.
Like the Apple TV, the HomeAccessory is expected to support the independent running of applications and media playback. It can also function as an AirPlay receiver. One notable feature is a customizable lock screen with multiple clock faces, reminiscent of the clock faces introduced to the Apple TV in tvOS 18.
