March 31, 2026 – At a recent major supplier summit, Toyota Motor Corporation’s President Koji Sato delivered a strongly – worded statement to 484 partner companies.
Sato pulled no punches in highlighting that in the face of fierce competition from Chinese automakers and rapid technological changes across the globe, even industry behemoths like Toyota could face the risk of being left behind by the times if they fail to undergo fundamental transformation.

During the meeting, he issued a clear warning. If the entire industry remains stagnant and does not seek breakthroughs, it will be unable to survive. He hoped that all partners would develop a profound sense of crisis, realizing that they are in the midst of a ruthless battle that will determine their very existence.
Sato stressed that the road ahead would be extremely arduous. The whole industry must unite and comprehensively enhance its ability to win in the competition. To prepare for this tough fight, Toyota and its supplier network need to significantly improve production and operational efficiency in all aspects.
In his view, Chinese automakers are not only rapidly enhancing their product capabilities but also offering highly competitive prices. This efficient competitive model forces traditional automakers to re – examine and reconstruct their existing car – making models and cost management systems.
Software is gradually emerging as the new main battlefield in the automotive industry competition. This trend has brought unprecedented cost pressures and technical challenges to the already complex vehicle R & D process. Traditional automakers must quickly achieve breakthroughs in this area.
Currently, the growing pressure from software competition, the constantly evolving technological landscape, and the external pressure from tariff policies jointly pose a dilemma for the traditional automotive industry. Sato called on the entire supply chain to closely unite and jointly tackle this unprecedented industry upheaval.
