July 30, 2025 – Tesla has recently sent a cryptic message to users of its Robotaxi app, hinting that the expansion of its Robotaxi platform in California is imminent. The company had previously made it clear that California was one of its key target regions for the ride-hailing service.
At present, Tesla’s Robotaxi service is only operational in Austin, Texas. However, the automaker has long been planning to extend this service to California and several other states. Based on the latest message Tesla sent to its users, it seems that the launch of the Robotaxi service in California is just around the corner.

Over the weekend, users received a message from Tesla asking them to accept and agree to new service terms. The message read: “If your trip is outside California, the vehicle will operate in autonomous mode… If your trip is within California, it will be operated using FSD (Supervised) with a safety driver, in accordance with the authorization from the California Public Utilities Commission.”
This message clearly shows that there will be significant differences between Tesla’s Robotaxi service in Austin and the one in California. In Texas, there is no one in the driver’s seat; instead, there is a safety monitor in the passenger seat whose job is to ensure the smooth running of the trip. In California, on the other hand, a safety monitor will be present in the driver’s seat, which means that the vehicles passengers ride in will be no different from those equipped with FSD (Supervised).
As of now, there is no geofence set up for California in Tesla’s Robotaxi app, so the service has not officially started in the state. Nevertheless, all signs point to the fact that the launch of Tesla’s Robotaxi platform in California is not far off.
