Stellantis Shifts Smart Cockpit to Android After Failed Amazon ‘Home-Car Ecosystem’ Venture

May 30 2025 – In a recent development, the collaboration between Stellantis and Amazon for the SmartCockpit initiative has officially concluded, although both companies will maintain their partnership in other areas. Stellantis has confirmed it will continue utilizing Amazon Web Services (AWS) and will retain Alexa functionality in some of its current vehicle models. Sources close to the matter indicate that Stellantis might pivot towards developing its smart cockpit system based on the Android operating system.

The partnership between Stellantis and Amazon, announced in 2022, aimed to integrate Amazon’s in-car technologies into Stellantis’s “SmartCockpit” smart cockpit system. After three years, the collaboration has now reached its conclusion, though both firms have emphasized ongoing cooperation in future projects.

When the partnership was first announced, then-CEO of Stellantis, Carlos Tavares, claimed it would transform Stellantis vehicles into “the most appealing and desirable spaces” even when not in use.

Initially, the collaboration seemed promising. By leveraging Amazon’s technology, Stellantis intended to offer software experiences integrated with Amazon’s ecosystem, including Alexa-powered voice assistants, e-commerce services, and the ability for drivers to remotely control Amazon devices at home, such as lights.

The original plan was for the first vehicles equipped with SmartCockpit to hit the market by late 2024 or early 2025. Stellantis was set to pay Amazon a fee per vehicle for software usage, while Amazon would reward Stellantis if users subscribed to Amazon services like Amazon Music through the in-car system. All related data was intended to be hosted on AWS.

However, a Reuters investigation revealed that the project has been terminated, though the exact reasons remain unclear. Both companies have stated that the termination allows their respective teams to focus on solutions that add more value for users and align better with their evolving strategic directions, and they plan to continue their partnership in the future.
