April 7, 2025 – India’s national government is deliberating strategies to combat the severe air pollution crisis in Delhi, with a key proposal on the table being the phased elimination of all pure diesel and gasoline vehicles across the capital and its neighboring regions. This initiative aims to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid models, and CNG-powered alternatives.
Local authorities are contemplating stringent measures to restrict new vehicle registrations in Delhi and its surrounding areas, allowing only EVs, CNG, or hybrid models. This move would gradually phase out vehicles running solely on gasoline or diesel.

Analysts suggest that certain registration restrictions could be enforced within the current fiscal year. For instance, Delhi might announce by the end of 2025 that only new buses utilizing clean fuels will be permitted for registration. In the case of three-wheeled and light commercial vehicles, the deadline is anticipated to be extended to 2026 or 2027.
Commercial taxis are likely to be granted a more extended transition period, while private cars and two-wheelers are expected to undergo transformation at a later stage.
The timeline for restricting private car and two-wheeler registrations is projected to be implemented between 2030 and 2035, during which only clean fuel vehicles (such as EVs, CNG, and hybrids) will be allowed for registration.
