Elon Musk Says Tesla’s FSD: A Major Boost to Driving Safety, Halving Insurance Fees

January 22, 2026 – On Wednesday local time, U.S. insurance company Lemonade made a significant announcement. It will offer a 50% discount on insurance premiums for Tesla owners, but only if their vehicles have the Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature activated.

Elon Musk, responding on X today, said, “When the Tesla self-driving function is turned on, insurance premiums are cut in half because it greatly enhances the safety of vehicle driving.”

Upon further inquiry, it was found that Lemonade’s insurance service obtains vehicle telemetry data through technical cooperation with Tesla. This allows the company to distinguish between FSD-driven miles and human-driven miles and calculate insurance premiums based on actual risks.

Shai Wininger, co-founder and president of Lemonade, stressed that unlike traditional insurance companies, which treat vehicles as general cars and use fixed risk models, his company evaluates risks through high-precision telemetry data.

Wininger stated, “A vehicle that can sense 360 degrees, never gets tired, and has millisecond-level reaction speed can’t be compared to human driving. In addition to today’s product launch, we also announce our commitment to Tesla owners. As Tesla continues to update the FSD software and improve safety, there is a possibility of further reducing insurance premiums in the future.”
