June 9, 2025 – The British government has unveiled a major announcement today, revealing plans to allocate a staggering £86 billion over the next several years, stretching up to the fiscal year 2029/30, to bolster research and development (R&D) across multiple sectors.
Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves is set to officially declare this ambitious initiative during her fiscal expenditure review report on June 11. The initiative spans a wide array of fields, including new pharmaceuticals, battery technology, and artificial intelligence. Its primary objectives are to stimulate job creation, fuel economic growth, and solidify the United Kingdom’s position as a global leader in scientific research.

Next Wednesday, Reeves will embark on the crucial task of distributing over £2 trillion in public funds among her cabinet colleagues. This allocation will significantly shape the trajectory of the Labour government, which has been in power for a year, over the next four years.
Prior to the R&D announcement, the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT) highlighted that Reeves had pledged last week to invest £15.6 billion in local transportation infrastructure within urban areas across the North, Midlands, and Southwest of England. This move underscores the government’s commitment to comprehensive development, encompassing both technological advancement and essential infrastructure upgrades.
