December 16, 2025 – On Monday local time, Nvidia, the well – known chip design behemoth, made a strategic move by announcing the acquisition of artificial intelligence software company SchedMD. This acquisition is a clear indication of Nvidia’s enhanced commitment to open – source technology and a further step in its intensified investment in the AI ecosystem, aiming to stay ahead in the increasingly competitive market.
Nvidia is not just a provider of high – performance chips. It also offers a range of in – house AI models covering areas such as physical simulation and autonomous driving. These models are made available to researchers and enterprises in the form of open – source software. Its proprietary CUDA software has become an industry standard for most developers, serving as a crucial advantage in driving its chip sales and highlighting the central role of software in maintaining its dominant position in the AI field.
The market responded positively to this news, along with the earlier announcement of a new generation of open – source AI models. Nvidia’s stock price rose by 1.35% on the same day.
SchedMD provides software that helps in scheduling large – scale computing tasks, which often take up a significant portion of the server capacity in data centers. The company’s core technology, Slurm, is open – source software that developers and enterprises can use for free. SchedMD commercializes its business by offering engineering support and maintenance services.
The financial details of the transaction have not been disclosed. However, Nvidia stated that it would continue to distribute SchedMD’s software in an open – source manner.
In a blog post, Nvidia said, “Slurm has already supported the latest Nvidia hardware and is one of the key infrastructures required for generative AI. It is widely used by base model developers and AI builders to manage the demands of model training and inference.”
Earlier on the same day, Nvidia also launched a brand – new series of open – source AI models, claiming that they would be faster, more cost – effective, and more intelligent compared to its previous products.
SchedMD was founded in 2010 in Livermore, California, USA, by Morris “Moe” Jette and Danny Auble, the developers of Slurm software. According to the company’s official website, it currently has about 40 employees, and its clients include cloud infrastructure company CoreWeave and the Barcelona Supercomputing Center, among other institutions.
