OpenAI Mandates Identity Verification for Future AI Model Access

April 14, 2025 – A recent update on OpenAI’s official support page indicates that the company may soon implement a mandatory identity verification process for organizations seeking access to specific upcoming AI models.

This verification process, labeled as the “Verified Organization” initiative, is described as “a novel approach for developers to unlock OpenAI’s most advanced models and features.” The verification will necessitate the submission of government-issued identification documents from countries supported by OpenAI’s API. Notably, each identification document can only be used to verify one organization every 90 days, and not all organizations will be eligible for this process.

The support page elaborates, “At OpenAI, we recognize our responsibility to ensure that artificial intelligence is both widely accessible and safely utilized. Unfortunately, a small number of developers have intentionally violated our usage policies, leading to misuse of the OpenAI API. To mitigate unsafe AI usage while continuing to provide advanced models to a broader developer community, OpenAI has introduced this verification process.”

As OpenAI’s products continue to evolve in complexity and capability, this new verification process is likely aimed at enhancing the security of its offerings. The company has previously released multiple reports detailing its efforts to detect and reduce malicious use of its models.
