April 16, 2025 – OpenAI has unveiled the members of its newly formed non-profit advisory committee, tasked with shaping the strategic direction of its philanthropic endeavors. The committee comprises four distinguished individuals, each bringing a wealth of experience and expertise to the table.
Leading the charge is Dolores Huerta, a legendary labor activist whose work in the 20th century laid the groundwork for workers’ rights movements. Alongside her is Monica Lozano, the former president and CEO of the University Futures Foundation and a current board member at Apple Inc. Dr. Robert K. Ross, a former president and CEO of the California Endowment for Health and Wellness, also joins the committee, bringing his deep understanding of healthcare and social welfare. Rounding out the group is Jack Oliver, a seasoned professional with extensive experience in government, technology, business, and advocacy.

OpenAI’s announcement underscores the committee’s role in providing “strategic guidance to OpenAI’s charitable initiatives.” The company aims to leverage its non-profit arm as a catalyst for community-driven solutions to pressing global challenges, including healthcare, education, public services, and scientific research.
This move comes months after OpenAI’s controversial shift toward for-profit operations, a transition that sparked backlash from former employees and advocacy groups. In a legal filing supporting Elon Musk’s lawsuit, some ex-staffers criticized the company for straying from its original mission of benefiting humanity. Additionally, a coalition of non-profits, labor organizations, and charity leaders urged California Attorney General Rob Bonta to investigate the change.
Despite these challenges, OpenAI remains steadfast in its commitment to its non-profit mission. “As we’ve stated, OpenAI’s non-profit entity will persist, and this committee will be instrumental in amplifying its impact and reach,” the company emphasized in its announcement.
