April 17, 2025 – According to recent reports from Bloomberg, OpenAI is currently engaged in discussions to acquire Windsurf, formerly known as Codeium, an AI-powered coding tool, for an estimated $3 billion. If finalized, this acquisition would represent OpenAI’s largest deal to date, positioning the company to strengthen its presence in the competitive AI-driven coding assistant market. These systems are designed to generate code based on natural language inputs.
While negotiations are ongoing, sources familiar with the matter, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the confidential nature of the discussions, cautioned that terms remain fluid and the deal could still fall apart. Both OpenAI and Windsurf have declined to comment on the speculation.

Windsurf, officially registered as Exafunction Inc., has previously explored fundraising rounds with investors like Kleiner Perkins and General Catalyst, aiming to secure capital at a 3billionvaluation.Thecompanywaslastvaluedat1.25 billion in a round led by General Catalyst in 2023. Since its founding in 2021, Windsurf has raised over $200 million from venture capital firms, including Greenoaks Capital Partners and AIX Ventures, according to PitchBook data.
Should the acquisition proceed, OpenAI would directly compete with industry players such as Anthropic, GitHub (owned by Microsoft), and Anysphere in the rapidly expanding AI-driven coding services sector. The deal underscores a broader trend of consolidation as companies vie for market share in an increasingly crowded space.
OpenAI has a history of strategic acquisitions, having previously purchased Rockset, a vector database company, and Multi, a remote collaboration platform. The surge in investor interest in AI coding tools is further evidenced by Anysphere’s Cursor, which recently engaged in funding talks at a nearly $10 billion valuation.
