OpenAI CEO Debunks Rumors of ‘Orion’ Model Launch: ‘Fake News Out of Control’

October 26, 2024 – OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has responded to recent reports about the company’s next-generation model, Orion, dismissing them as “fake news out of control.”

Previously, foreign media outlets had reported that OpenAI planned to launch a cutting-edge model called “Orion” in December of this year. According to these reports, Orion would adopt a different release model compared to GPT-4o and o1, and would not be widely released through ChatGPT. Instead, it would initially be licensed to closely collaborating companies to help them build their own products and features.

OpenAI executives had hinted that Orion would be over 100 times more powerful than GPT-4. In September, Tadao Nagasaki, CEO of OpenAI Japan, stated that while GPT-3 and GPT-4 had similar performances, GPT Next (presumably Orion) was expected to make a significant leap forward, with a 100-fold improvement in performance.

However, Altman’s recent comments on the X platform suggest that these reports may have been exaggerated or misinformed. As the CEO of OpenAI, his statement carries significant weight and indicates that the company may not be ready to release such a powerful model in the near future, or that the reports about Orion’s capabilities were overstated.

In any case, the development of AI technology continues to advance rapidly, and OpenAI remains at the forefront of this progress. While the specifics of Orion remain unclear, it is certain that the company is working on innovative new models that will push the boundaries of artificial intelligence even further.
