July 23, 2024 – Elon Musk has unveiled a major milestone in the realm of artificial intelligence with the commencement of training operations on the Memphis Supercluster, a feat achieved at precisely 4:20 AM local time. Acknowledging the pivotal contributions of the xAI team, X team, NVIDIA, and their supporting partners, Musk expressed his gratitude for their relentless efforts.
Boasting an unparalleled arsenal of 100,000 NVIDIA H100 GPUs, the Memphis Supercluster adopts advanced liquid cooling technology and a unified RDMA network interconnect architecture, positioning it as the most formidable AI training facility globally. This formidable assembly surpasses every supercomputer on the latest Top500 list, including the mighty Frontier with 37,888 AMD GPUs, Aurora boasting 60,000 Intel GPUs, and Microsoft Eagle with 14,400 Nvidia H100 GPUs, underscoring its unrivaled GPU scale.

Musk has set his sights on an ambitious goal: to birth the world’s most potent artificial intelligence, dubbed Grok3, by the end of this year. The Memphis Supercluster stands as the cornerstone of this endeavor, equipped with the necessary firepower to propel this vision into reality.
The construction of this “Gigafactory of Compute” was swiftly initiated following the agreement solidified in March, marking a remarkable turnaround time. Last month, the Greater Memphis Chamber, an economic development organization, confirmed the ongoing preparations for the cutting-edge facility under xAI’s umbrella.
To secure this landmark partnership, xAI verbally committed to enhancing Memphis’ public infrastructure, crucial for supporting the data center’s growth. This includes the construction of a new substation and a wastewater treatment facility, highlighting the company’s commitment to the city’s development.
The Memphis Light, Gas, and Water Division’s CEO estimates that the xAI facility in Memphis could potentially consume up to 150 megawatts of electricity per hour, equivalent to the energy needs of 100,000 households. Furthermore, XAI anticipates requiring at least a million gallons of cooling water daily, underscoring the massive operational scale.
Concerns from the community have surfaced, with Memphis City Council Member Pearl Walker voicing apprehensions about potential water scarcity and energy supply issues. However, xAI has been proactive in addressing these concerns, ensuring transparency and responsible resource management.
Earlier in May, xAI announced securing a whopping $6 billion in funding dedicated to AI development, signaling its serious intent. Reflecting its aggressive expansion plans, the company has already posted six job openings for its Memphis supercomputing site, encompassing roles such as Fiber Optic Foreman, Network Engineer, and Project Manager.
As the Memphis Supercluster hums to life, the world watches with bated breath, anticipating the emergence of a new AI giant that could reshape industries and push the boundaries of human-machine collaboration.
