Meta Launches Superintelligence Lab Amid AI Team Reshuffle

August 20, 2025 – Meta has made a sweeping overhaul of its artificial intelligence (AI) organizational structure, as confirmed by an internal memo reported by Bloomberg. This restructuring comes after months of rumors and speculation, first sparked by a report from The Information last Friday.

The tech giant is dismantling its existing AI division and relaunching it as Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), with four specialized teams under its umbrella. The most prominent of these is TBD Labs, led by newly appointed Chief AI Officer Alexandr Wang, who joined Meta in June after founding Scale AI. TBD Labs will spearhead research into foundational models, including Meta’s flagship Llama series—the latest iteration of which debuted in April.

The remaining three teams within MSL will focus on advanced research, seamless product integration, and robust infrastructure development, respectively. This division of labor reflects Meta’s strategy to streamline AI innovation while addressing competition from rivals like OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google DeepMind.

Sources familiar with the matter reveal that Meta has poured significant resources into this reorganization over recent months, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg personally involved in recruiting top talent for the new teams, as reported by Bloomberg in June. The move underscores Meta’s commitment to maintaining its edge in the rapidly evolving AI landscape, where breakthroughs in generative models and superintelligence research are reshaping industry standards.

By consolidating its AI efforts under MSL, Meta aims to accelerate development cycles and foster closer collaboration between researchers and product teams. The company’s ability to translate these structural changes into tangible advancements will be closely watched as the global AI race intensifies.
