April 2, 2025 – Joelle Pineau, the head of artificial intelligence research at Meta, has announced her departure from the company, effective May 30th. Pineau, who joined Meta in 2017, currently serves as the Vice President of AI Research and leads the Facebook AI Research (FAIR) team, which is under the direction of renowned AI expert Yann LeCun.
Pineau’s resignation comes at a time when Meta is significantly increasing its investments in the field of artificial intelligence. The company is reportedly planning to allocate $65 billion in 2025 towards AI infrastructure development, aiming to further propel advancements in related technologies.

A Meta spokesperson, in an interview with Bloomberg, stated that the company has not yet identified Pineau’s direct successor but is actively searching for a suitable candidate. Last year, Meta underwent an organizational restructuring that placed the AI research department under the purview of Chris Cox, the Chief Product Officer.
Regarding Pineau’s future plans, she has expressed her intention to take a break following her resignation before embarking on a new, undisclosed “adventure.”
