April 10, 2025 – Following OpenAI’s announcement to integrate a competitor’s AI model standard into its data systems, Google has swiftly aligned with the same approach.
Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google DeepMind, took to the X platform on Wednesday to announce that Google would extend support for Anthropic’s Model Context Protocol (MCP) to its Gemini model and Software Development Kit (SDK). No specific timeline was provided for this rollout.
Hassabis remarked, “MCP is a robust protocol that’s rapidly emerging as an open standard in the era of AI agents. We look forward to collaborating with the MCP team and other industry stakeholders to enhance this protocol further.”

The Model Context Protocol (MCP), an open-source initiative by Anthropic, is designed to facilitate the integration of large language models with external data sources and tools, establishing secure, bidirectional connections between large models and data sources.
MCP enables AI models to retrieve data from commercial tools, software, and other data repositories to accomplish tasks, while also extracting data from content repositories and application development environments. This protocol empowers developers to create bidirectional connections between data sources and AI-powered applications, such as chatbots.
Developers can leverage “MCP servers” to expose data and construct “MCP clients,” such as applications and workflows, which can connect to these servers as needed.
Since Anthropic released MCP as an open-source protocol several months ago, numerous companies, including Block, Apollo, Replit, Codeium, and Sourcegraph, have already added support for MCP to their platforms.
