ChatGPT’s Meteoric Rise: 10% of Global Adults Now Monthly Active Users, Reports OpenAI & Harvard

October 10, 2025 – According to a report by Business Insider today, ChatGPT has witnessed a meteoric rise in its monthly active user base since its launch, with the latest figures setting a remarkable new benchmark.

A research paper published last month by scholars from OpenAI, Duke University, and Harvard University revealed that ChatGPT boasted 700 million monthly active users in July, accounting for roughly 10% of the global adult population.

It’s likely that this number has climbed even higher in the current period. During the annual DevDay event held on Monday local time, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman announced that the number of weekly active users of ChatGPT has surged to 800 million.

The paper also indicated that as of July, ChatGPT was handling over 2.5 billion messages per day, which translates to approximately 29,000 queries per second. The researchers emphasized that such a rapid pace of global adoption is unprecedented for a new technology.

ChatGPT’s explosive growth underscores its leading position in the field of artificial intelligence and large language models. Since Altman first announced at the company’s inaugural developer conference in November 2023 that the platform had 100 million active users, its weekly active user count has soared by 700%.

Moreover, ChatGPT’s user base far outstrips that of other comparable chatbots. Reports indicate that xAI’s Grok has 65 million monthly active users, while both Claude and Perplexity AI each have 30 million monthly active users.
