July 29, 2025 – In a recent interview with CNN this past Sunday, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates shared his insights on the rapid evolution of artificial intelligence (AI), stating that its progress has far outstripped his initial expectations, particularly in areas like programming and in-depth research.
Gates highlighted that AI is set to transform the working environments for both white-collar and blue-collar workers. For university graduates, he noted, the job market is likely to become even more competitive. While AI may take over certain straightforward tasks, such as telemarketing or customer support roles, he emphasized that in fields requiring high levels of creativity, AI will primarily serve as a complementary tool rather than a replacement.
Despite acknowledging that these changes could lead to short-term disruptions, Gates remains optimistic about the long-term benefits. He believes that increased productivity will ultimately create opportunities for people to engage in more meaningful and valuable work.
When discussing the distinction between artificial intelligence and artificial general intelligence (AGI), Gates pointed out that definitions vary widely. He suggested that AGI could be considered achieved when AI systems can perform tasks like telemarketing or customer support more cost-effectively and accurately than humans.
The pace of AI development has been particularly surprising to Gates, especially with the introduction of advanced research capabilities. He shared an anecdote about his own experience: “I used to have the advantage of being able to consult with some of the brightest minds whenever I had questions about physics. But now, I rely on AI’s deep research features to get answers first, and then I share them with my knowledgeable friends to verify. More often than not, they tell me, ‘Oh yeah, you didn’t really need my help at all.’”
Gates also revealed that he is collaborating with Microsoft and OpenAI to ensure that AI technologies are accessible in low-income countries. By promoting their use in sectors such as healthcare, education, and agriculture, he hopes to drive progress and improve living standards in these regions.
When asked about advice for young people navigating the complexities of the AI-driven job market, Gates encouraged them to embrace these new tools with enthusiasm. “Mastering AI capabilities is both exciting and rewarding,” he said. “Staying updated with its advancements will be crucial, though it doesn’t guarantee immunity from workforce changes.” He reiterated his long-standing advice: “Maintain your curiosity, read widely, and make use of the latest technologies available to you.”
