August 9, 2025 – According to a report from 9to5mac on the 8th, Apple has announced that the ChatGPT integration within Apple Intelligence will be upgraded to the cutting-edge GPT-5 model across iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26. This enhancement is anticipated to roll out as early as next month.
At present, the Apple Intelligence features integrated into iOS 18, iPadOS 18, macOS Sequoia, and visionOS 2 are powered by the GPT-4o model. Once activated, Apple Intelligence leverages ChatGPT to offer three primary capabilities: obtaining answers via Siri, generating text or images within writing tools, and utilizing visual intelligence in combination with camera controls to identify nearby locations and objects.

Apple has underscored its commitment to user privacy for those accessing ChatGPT through Apple Intelligence. Measures include concealing IP addresses and ensuring that OpenAI does not retain request content. However, if users choose to link their OpenAI accounts, OpenAI’s data usage policies will then apply.
The upcoming iOS 26 is set to introduce a host of new features to Apple Intelligence. These include real-time translation of conversations during FaceTime calls, phone conversations, and messaging, as well as an upgraded visual intelligence function that allows users to search for and interact with content directly on their screens. Additionally, Apple has made its on-device foundational models available to developers, paving the way for the creation of more intelligent and powerful applications.
In addition to the GPT-5 upgrade, OpenAI has also unveiled two open-weight large language models. One of these models is designed to run on Macs equipped with Apple chips. Furthermore, OpenAI has introduced new initiatives aimed at promoting healthier usage habits among ChatGPT users.
