Internal documents revealed by CNBC on the 23rd indicate that multiple departments have notified select employees that their roles could be jeopardized if they fail to adopt a hybrid work model requiring regular visits to nearby offices. Notably, some of these employees had previously secured approval for fully remote work setups.
The tech industry’s 2020 pivot toward flexible work arrangements now faces structural adjustments driven by sluggish commercial real estate markets, with San Francisco serving as a prime example of this shift. Earlier this year, Google initiated voluntary resignation packages for certain U.S.-based full-time staff. Remote employees were reportedly informed that failing to commute to offices at least three days per week would leave “voluntary resignation” as their sole remaining option. As of late last year, Google’s global workforce stood at approximately 183,000 employees—a decline of roughly 7,000 from two years prior.

An internal memo surfaced showing that Google co-founder Sergey Brin urged AI division staff in February to prioritize daily office attendance, advocating a 60-hour workweek as the “sweet spot for peak productivity.” Brin emphasized the ferocity of competition in artificial intelligence, stressing that maintaining leadership required “full-throttle execution.”
Company spokesperson Courtenay Mencini clarified that return-to-office mandates remain team-specific decisions rather than corporate-wide directives. “We’ve consistently highlighted the value of in-person collaboration for driving innovation and tackling complex challenges,” she stated. “Consequently, some teams have implemented policies requiring employees living near offices to work on-site three days weekly.”
