March 23, 2025 – Italian national newspaper, Il Foglio, has claimed a groundbreaking milestone by publishing the world’s first newspaper entirely authored by generative artificial intelligence (AI).
The AI-generated newspaper was inserted as a paper supplement within the regular edition distributed on the same day, clearly marked with the label “AI” at the masthead. From headlines to summaries and full articles, every aspect of the content was crafted by AI algorithms. Staff members of the newspaper posed questions based on current events to the AI platform, which then produced articles in response.
According to the newspaper’s editor-in-charge, even if the AI-produced content contains factual errors or takes a stance differing from the publication’s usual reporting perspective, journalists and editors will not review or correct the generated articles. This unique AI newspaper is still in its experimental phase, yet it represents a bold step forward in the integration of AI in journalism.
