Musk’s xAI Unveils Image Creation API at $0.07 per Image Cost

March 21, 2025 – Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence venture, xAI, has announced the integration of an image generation capability to its Application Programming Interface (API). Currently, this feature is exclusively powered by the “grok-2-image-1212” model, which can produce up to ten images based on a given prompt, processing a maximum of five requests per second. The output format is JPG, with each generated image carrying a fee of $0.07.

Last year, xAI collaborated with AI startup Black Forest Labs to introduce image generation on Musk’s social platform X, where the service was offered at approximately $0.05 per image.

In its documentation, xAI notes that the current version of the API does not support adjustments to image quality, size, or style. Additionally, user prompts may undergo modifications by a “chat model” before being processed.

According to TechCrunch, since launching its API in October 2024, xAI has been exploring new revenue streams to accelerate the training and development of its flagship Grok 3 model. The company is in negotiations with investors for a 10billionfundinground,whichcouldpotentiallypushitsvaluationto75 billion.

Furthermore, xAI has recently acquired a generative AI video company and plans to expand its data center in Memphis to enhance the training and operational capabilities of its models, hinting at even broader ambitions for its future development.
