They Lied to Me”: Lei Jun Says Li Bin and He Xiaopeng Tricked Him Into Building Cars — He Xiaopeng Fires Back With One Line

May 30, 2026 – Xiaomi officially handed over the keys to the first batch of YU7 GT owners today at its factory delivery center, with company CEO Lei Jun and brand ambassador Shu Qi jointly presenting the vehicles to the new owners.

During the livestream, Lei turned the spotlight on two old friends — NIO’s William Li and XPeng’s He Xiaopeng — joking that they had “tricked” him into entering the EV race. According to Lei, neither Li nor He had any plans to build cars five years ago, yet they kept telling him “it’s fun.” Once he actually jumped in, he realized the truth was far from that.

Lei also shared behind-the-scenes details of Xiaomi Auto’s brutal testing regime. During summer trials in Turpan, where outdoor temperatures soared past 45°C, the car’s extensive glass surfaces pushed cabin temperatures to a scorching 90°C. Even though the YU7’s sun-shielding performance reportedly outpaced rivals by over 10°C, the interior still hit 60–70°C. Winter testing in Heihe brought freezing conditions and muddy roads so extreme that the test lead admitted it was the first time in his 20-plus-year career he had seen a chairman show up in person.

He Xiaopeng responded later in the day with a short post: “Exhaustion and joy coexist.”
